Any dog owner would tell you that these animals are kind of addicting. Most households would have two or more pets. Dogs are aptly branded as man’s best friends because of their affectionate and loyal nature. Dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years. Despite the long years of association these animals would exhibit behaviors that are puzzling to man. One of these bizarre behaviors is eating dirt. An interesting question then is; why do dogs eat dirt?
Dog owners must understand the reasons why the pet is eating dirt as this habit can have harmful repercussions on the health of the dog. Dogs owners take measures to save the dog from parvovirus because this is a fatal canine disease. The virus that is shed in the dog’s feces can survive in the soil for months so that a dog that has eaten infected dirt can get this dreaded canine disease.
Whipworm infestation is another dangerous consequence of the dog’s dirt eating habit. Poisoning is a very dangerous consequence of this behavior given the fact that dirt can be contaminated with anti freeze and other toxic substances. The dog’s inclination to eat dirt is dangerous thus it must be stopped and owners can address this concern by knowing the reasons why dogs eat dirt.
Dogs are voracious eaters and eating dirt can be the dog’s way of telling the owner that it is not getting enough food. Dogs though are pampered pets thus it would be impossible if owners would let the pet go hungry. Dogs therefore have a natural inclination to ingest not only food but any kind of non-food substances that have no nutritive values. The inclination to eat substances with no nutritional values is called pica. Pica and other unwanted habits can be the outcome of a behavioral concern. Dogs that are often left with no toys and no one to play with develop unacceptable behaviors. Boredom may motivate the dog to eat dirt.
A diet that is low on nutritional values or a medical concern are factors that can motivate a dog to eat dirt. Due to eating indiscretion; dogs commonly suffer from stomach upsets. Cheap commercial food may be low on mineral and vitamin contents. Dogs are truly amazing because they possess the ability to discern what is wrong with their systems. Dog experts believe that by eating dirt the dog can cope with the vitamins and mineral deficiencies. Needless to say, the dirt eating habit must be curbed because of its dangerous effects. The habit can be a wakeup call for the dog owner to devote more attention to the well being of the pet.
