If you find that you need to build a large reptile cage for your pet green iguana, the first step will be checking out your house to figure out where the best spot will be. Do you live in an area where your iguana can live outside? Do you have an empty room with space for a large enclosure? You may decide that it will be best to construct in your garage, or even in a large unused closet.

Green iguanas need a habitat where they have enough room to move about freely, and of course, they do better in a tall cage that gives them room to climb. A good sized iguana enclosure should be at least 1-1/2 times the length of your iguana in width, and as deep as the iguana is long. For an adult iguana, you’ll need to have a cage at least 6 feet high. Of course, the enclosure also needs to be secure against escape, and will need to be properly maintained for temperature and humidity.

For smaller iguanas, it’s comparatively easy to enclose a closet for use as a habitat. Removing the doors allows you put a screen or Plexiglas cover over the front. Of course, if you use Plexiglas, you’ll want to make sure that you allow for plenty of ventilation so as to avoid problems with overheating. Variables like temperature and humidity are easier to control in an enclosed spot like a closet, and the area over the rod can be closed off with screen to provide a spot for the UV and basking lights.

If you’re iguana is very big, you may want to build it a habitat outside. If you live in a warm climate, your iguana can live very comfortably outside. However, in cooler weather, an iguana must have a place to go to stay warm or they can and will freeze to death – so it’s good to have a place indoors for them when the temperature drops. An outdoor habitat has the advantage of allowing your iguana to bask in natural sun, where he can receive the UV rays that are so important for his health.

These ideas for large reptile cages are just a few of the possible solutions for bigger lizards. There are plenty of ways you can customize your pet’s habitat to make it more comfortable. Use your imagination, and remember that the proper enclosure will help your pet live a healthier and longer life.
